BlogCertificate transfer

Does an ISO certificate transfer keep the same expiry date?

IAF Consultancy

On a clean transfer, the new certificate runs to the expiry date already printed on the certificate you hold. Changing certification body leaves the three-year clock where it is. A new cycle starts when a recertification audit is completed.

Why does the date stay?

The accepting body is recognizing a certification already in the middle of its cycle. Audits already completed count. Surveillance visits still to come stay on the programme. A fresh three-year certificate, issued with no recertification audit, would add time the cycle had not earned. Accredited bodies issue the remaining term.

Read the expiry date on the written offer and compare it with the certificate you hold. The dates match unless the offer is for a recertification audit and says so. If the dates differ and the offer is silent about why, ask before you sign.

What happens to the surveillance visits?

The next visit is the one the current programme already expected, adjusted for anything the review finds. It is a surveillance visit, or a recertification visit when that is what the calendar says. It is a continuation, rather than a return to a first-time Stage 1. After the new certificate is issued, the cycle continues: surveillance, then recertification, then surveillance again. That loop is in after the certificate and in surveillance after a transfer.

When would the expiry date move?

The date moves when the work is a recertification. That is the right quote when the certificate is close to expiry and a short remaining term is of little use to the company. The date also moves when the review finds that the certificate cannot be recognized and the company is audited as a new client. A new client who completes Stage 2 receives a new cycle. The choice between those paths is in transfer or start over.

Put the expiry date and the date of the last visit in the scope notes on the application, and choose Transfer from another body. The offer then states the date the new certificate would carry, the timing of the next visit, and the price. SMG issues that certificate under its IAS accreditation. IAF Consultancy does the audit work the offer describes. The surrounding rules are in how to transfer an ISO certificate.
